30 days ago I flew from Gatwick Airport in London and landed in Colombo. With my two backpacks I step out the airport arrivals at 04:20AM. I was carrying with me my two bags and at the same time carrying some insecurities to, but I was excited, I was on my first solo trip!
After breathing deeply for 10 seconds, I got inside of the bus with my backpacks and sat behing a foreigner couple next to the window. After getting a little bit more relaxed, I started thinking that was no way back, I was in Asia, on my first solo trip, in a different country, where everything was new to me and I would have just to be brave. The journey to Colombo takes one hour approximately and I could see the landscape coming alive with the sunrise. When I got to the bus stop and got out of the bus, all by body shake it. On the bus station one in one minute are buses coming in or coming out and you need to be very careful to not get hit by one. Outside of the station is where the real action happens, tuk tuks, buses, cars and motorbikes coming from everywhere very fast. The loud noises from the klaxons, the traffic, the people walking, the market close by and all the smells, everything comes to you like a wave of a different energy. I grab my phone after 3 minutes in the center because everywhere I looked someone would ask me if I needed a tuk tuk or a taxi and I new the train station was close by so I wouldn't need any of these. I opened the Google maps on my iPhone an searched for the station. Without taking my eyes from my phone I walked until I find the train station, I bought the ticket and in 10 minutes I was on the train, on my way to Mount Lavinia, where I would be staying for two weeks.
